Victor Martinez facing tough times – MLB Detroit Tigers News
According to leading sports website, Victor Martinez underwent a major knee surgery on Friday. The source further added that Martinez is likely to have repairs to both the lateral and medical meniscus in his left knee.
The procedure done was micro fracture surgery and Martinez will also be having his torn left ACL repaired in another surgery after a couple of months. When Martinez received this injury, everybody thought that he will be back to the Tigers’ team before the playoffs. However, latest reports revealed that the injury is a serious one and the striker could miss the entire next season to recover from it.
Martinez’s injury was a big blow to Detroit Tigers. Last season, he batted with great control and aggression to help the Tigers win the American League Central title. His sensational .330 batting average goes on to suggest that he is a consistent performer. Batting behind Miguel Cabrera, he made the most of available opportunities with the Tigers last season.
Tigers’ General Manager Dave Dombrowski described Martinez’s injury as a serious situation. He further added that the Tigers will do everything they can to make him feel better. Martinez has already started to train with the Tigers’ coaching staff. He will be looking to improve his health to get back into the Tigers’ team before the 2013 season.
"It's kind of like a sock in the gut. You have to be resilient. After you feel sorry for yourself for a day or two, you move on," said Tigers' President Dave Dombrowski.
"Our main focus will be replacing a bat in the middle of the order, probably looking for short-term," he further added. "We do have Brendan Boesch coming back. We do have Delmon Young all year long. … The reality is that you're not going to have someone replace Victor Martinez, but some guys are going to have to step up and do better."
In January 2012, the Tigers agreed to a nine year $214 million contract with Prince Fielder. The left hand striker is one of the most dynamic hitters in the game and he has come into the Tigers’ side as Martinez’ replacement. Although Dombrowski stated it was a short term move, considering Fielder’s hitting abilities, he is likely to stay in the team for the obvious next few years.
