Victor Martinez ready to make comeback in 2013 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers’ Designated Hitter Victor Martinez is looking to make a strong comeback in the next season. Fans cannot be blamed for forgetting Martinez, who has not swung a bit for a long while.
Martinez has not played a game for the Tigers for last 13 months. It is a long time in baseball, particularly for a man who is going to be 34-years-old in seven weeks.
Martinez will be looking to make the most of available opportunities in 2013 before he calls it a career. Tigers’ hitter suffered a knee injury while taking part in routine workout session in January 2012, which forced him out of the game for the entire
season.
According to a leading sports website, the right hander is expected to heal from the torn left knee ligament before the start of 2013 Major League Baseball Spring Training. It will be interesting to see if Martinez can be the same hitter after spending a
long time away from the baseball field.
"I want to make sure I say this right, because I don't want to put a negative thought in anybody's mind," Leyland explained. "But I really don't know the answer to that.”
"Victor hasn't played for a year. Everybody's just assuming, 'Well, you got Victor back.' And, believe me, I'm thrilled to have Victor back.”
"We get the Victor back we had two years ago, we're really good. But who knows that? The guy hasn't seen a live pitch in quite a while. So, I don't know how it's going to come out. Everybody's just assuming."
Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland will be looking to arrange training sessions for Martinez to help him regain his timing. Martinez, who hit .330 with 103 RBI’s and .850 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) in 2012, will be hoping to regain the skills that enabled
him to dominate the American League pitchers.
Leyland will be expecting his star player to fight back from his injury to revive his MLB career. General Manager Dave Dombrowski is also convinced that Martinez will make a strong come back. Tigers’ hitting coach Lloyd has a real challenge on his hands
as he will have to help Martinez fine tune his swing ahead of the spring camp.
