Victor Martinez sparks as Detroit Tigers defeat Kansas City Royals 6-3 - MLB Update
Detroit Tigers’ designated hitter, Victor Martinez had a tremendous day with the bat as he struck three RBIs and went 2-for-5 with an ERA of .326 in the Tigers’ 6-3 victory against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City on September 21.
In the first inning, Tigers added one run while Royals scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Austin Jackson posted the first run for Tigers when Martinez drove towards centre-field. On the other side, Alex Gordon contributed a single run when Billy Butler
drove a double-run shot to left-field. The second or leading run for the Royals was taken by Butler when Jeff Francoeur doubled to deep centre-field.
The batters looked nervous from the second to fourth inning and failed to score runs. Salvador Perez singled off right-field and Alcides Escobar stole second base at the bottom of the second inning but Gordon and Johnny Giavotella both struck-out without
adding any run. Similarly, Andy Dirks got away with a single run towards right-centre while Jhonny Peralta ground out, Brandon Inge struck-out and Ramon Santiago flied out without taking even a single run.
Tigers scored one run to level the game 2-2 at the top of the fifth. Jackson posted one run when Martinez was ground out to second base and Don Kelly occupied second base to end the fifth inning. Royals went ahead 3-2 in the sixth inning when Butler singled
off right-field and Melky Cabrera scored the leading run on the throwing error of Tigers’ right-fielder Ryan Raburn.
Miguel Cabrera said, “It's awesome. We came out and played hard, played 100 percent. It's going to be nice going home and getting ready for the playoffs.”
Tigers’ manager, Jim Leyland said, “That was just what we got to do. We have to get everything lined up for the playoffs, so we used our pitching like that tonight, and it worked out fine.”
During seventh inning, Martinez drove towards centre-field and Kelly posted one run to tie the game 3-3. Tigers’ batters smashed three runs in the eighth inning to get a 6-3 lead. Raburn scored a single run when Miguel Cabrera doubled to deep right-field.
Kelly hit a two-run homer towards right-field and Danny Worth scored the final run.
As a result, Tigers were able to tie the two-game series 1-1 against the Royals at Kansas City.
