Victor Ortiz: I am currently focussing on my title-bout with Josesito Lopez – Boxing News
Victor Ortiz, the former WBC welterweight champion, praised his Saturday night opponent, Josesito Lopez, the former NABF light welterweight champion, for being a decent and quality pugilist, adding that he is currently focussing on Josesito-venture and will
think about Saul Alvarez after June 23, 2012 showdown.
Ortiz and Lopez recently shared their thoughts about the upcoming title clash during a media workout. The duo is scheduled to take on each other in a 12-round bout with vacant WBC Silver welterweight title up for grabs.
The event is being organised and promoted by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions and will be televised live on Showtime’s weekly boxing show. Victor and Lopez will headline the fight card and the WBC light welterweight semi-final bout between Humberto
Soto and Lucas Martin Matthysse will co-headline the extravaganza.
Victor, after undergoing a strenuous training session, commented that the critics should not be concerned about the fact that he is making a return after a substantial time period adding that he has been training for the last six-seven months continuously
and therefore does not have any ring rust at all.
While putting forth his thoughts, the former champion Victor stated, “I know that he’s (Josesito Lopez) a good fighter. A decent fighter. Good for him that he’s motivated. I have no ring rust because I’ve been in the gym for the last six-seven months.”
When asked as to what are his thoughts about his next engagement with Saul, the southpaw Californian stated, “I actually don’t care what people think. Right now, I’m like ‘Canelo who?’ My only focus is on Lopez. After Saturday night, then I could focus on
Canelo.”
Victor, 25, is currently ranked as the seventh best welterweight in World Boxing Organisation’s rankings. Also known as the ‘Vicious’, Ortiz has been in a total of 34 bouts.
The former WBO NABO and USBA light welterweight champion, Ortiz, has collected 22 of his 29 wins by knocking opponents out cold. His Saturday night opponent Lopez, 27, though resides at WBO’s 16th rank yet possesses an almost equal resume.
Lopez has been in a total of 34 bouts and has emerged victorious in 29, just like Victor. The orthodox Josesito is coming from a split decision loss to Jessie Vargas and is therefore looking forward at making a winning comeback.
After the workout, Lopez in a humble manner stated, “He’s (Victor Ortiz) the best fighter that I would have fought so far in my career. I definitely feel that I have the power to surprise him.”
The bout will undoubtedly be an explosive one as both men will enter the ring to prove as to who is worthy enough to grab the WBC silver welterweight gold. The ring for the showdown will be set up at Staples Center, Los Angeles, California, United States.
