Victor Ortiz: Miguel Cotto should know his place, must not dictate Manny Pacquiao - Boxing news
Victor Ortiz, former WBC welterweight champion, bashed Miguel Cotto, the current WBA (super) light middleweight champion, saying he has no right to dictate Manny Pacquiao, WBO Welterweight champion, the terms and conditions of any future bout in any case.
These comments were put forth by the welterweight specialist in an interview to a reputable boxing media representative. Ortiz, 24, was of the view that Manny is a legend; a brawler who has elite expertise in what he does the best. So how come is it possible
that a pugilist, who has not achieved much in his career and is definitely lower in experience than the Pac-man, tells him what to do and what not to.
The controversy popped up when Miguel, the Junito, told in an interview that he will not fulfil Manny’s demand of deducing the weight. The Puerto Rican proud said that he has made his due place in the light middleweight division and proudly holds the WBA
super title as well. So why should he forfeit all of this stature and accolade just to fight the Mexicutioner.
It must be mentioned that Miguel and Manny tasted each other’s fists in 2009. Both men took on each other at 145-pound weight. The bout was won by Manny when he was able to stop the orthodox in the 12th round and since then Miguel has strived hard to move
up the division and now resides at a record of 37-2 in a total of 39 bouts.
Miguel was one of the four probable opponents put forth by Manny’s promoter Bob Arum. The Fighting Pride of the Philippines was bound to select any one of the mentioned names for his upcoming brawl. When Miguel’s name came Manny just said one thing that
Cotto should come down at 147-pound so that he could take him on.
Miguel totally denied the 33-year-old southpaw’s request by saying that he cannot come down again at the mentioned division and quoted the fact that when Pacquiao can come up to take on Antonio Margarito at 150-pounds then why not the Pac-man gives the same
concession to him. It must be recalled that Manny did have a bout with Antonio in November 2010.
The said condition by Manny has made the Puerto Rican so much frustrated that he has started to think of another competitor widely predicted as Floyd Mayweather Junior. Ortiz comments were definitely harsh but later on he admitted that he doesn’t have the
right to interfere.
Victor commented, "Manny can do what he wants. He's the champ. He's the ruler of boxing and his division for a reason. As far as that goes, I leave that in their court. I can't really speak on his behalf, but all the best."
If Manny does not show some flexibility in his demand than Miguel will definitely go on to have a brawl with the American Money Boy Floyd, who is also vacant since Manny is not willing to take him as well.
