Victor Ortiz claims he lost to Floyd Mayweather due to miscommunication with referee – Boxing news
The Vicious, Victor Ortiz, who lost his WBC World Welterweight title against Floyd ’Pretty Boy’ Mayweather recently, has claimed the referee Joe Cortez said something due to which he started looking at him and was knocked out of the fight.
Ortiz gave Mayweather an illegal head-butt in the earlier stages of the fourth round due to which he was docked a point. However, after the fight was reset, the 24-year-old went on to give Mayweather a hug, as he felt guilty for some reason.
Mayweather, who is a five-division world champion and now the current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion, allowed Ortiz to hug him but in the meanwhile, he unleashed a left hook followed by a dazzling right hand punch, which forced Ortiz to
crash down to the canvas.
Ortiz afterwards claimed in front of the media that there was some miscommunication, as he stated the referee said something and he got confused.
Ortiz claimed, “I was looking at Joe, he said break or something, so I was like, huh? And then boom! And I was like, okay, I guess it's time for bed,” Ortiz said. “There was a miscommunication with the ref and he blindsided me.”
The Ring’s Michael Rosenthal in the meanwhile also shared his thoughts with the media. Rosenthal remarked it was Ortiz’s mistake and Mayweather did nothing illegal.
Rosenthal insisted Ortiz showed his lack of experience by intentionally head-butting Mayweather in frustration and then by letting his gloves down when the fight was reset.
“Victor Ortiz, new to mega-fights and in over his head, was brutally knocked out with one second remaining in the 4th round because he let his guard down in a moment of confusion and stupidity,” Rosenthal said. “For that, he can only blame himself.”
“It was an ugly moment, although one that probably can be attributed to a frustrated kid losing his head,” he added.
Victor Ortiz has also claimed he will get his title back within the next six months. However let’s see if Mayweather, who now holds a record of winning all of his 42 professional fights, with 26 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, will give Ortiz
another chance or not.
