Victor Ortiz replies to Bob Arum, claims Floyd Mayweather elbowed him first – Boxing news
The Vicious Victor Ortiz has replied to the founder and chief of Top Rank, Bob Arum, who accused Ortiz of head-butting Floyd Mayweather just to get out of the fight.
The 24-year-old former WBC World Welterweight Champion, Ortiz, took on the five-division world champion and the World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion, Floyd Mayweather, on September 17, 2011 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In the earlier stages of the fourth round, Ortiz intentionally head-butted Mayweather for which he was docked a point. However, later on when the fight was reset, Ortiz went on to hug Mayweather as an apology, but the undefeated American legend knocked him
out smartly with a dazzling left-right combination.
“Why do you think he butted him?” Arum said before a press conference to promote the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito rematch. “He just wanted to get out of there, in my opinion.”
Ortiz responded to Arum’s statement by admitting he did head-butt Mayweather but on the same note, Ortiz claimed the undefeated American legend, who holds a record of winning all of his 42 professional fights, with 26 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout,
elbowed him twice in his eye.
Ortiz, who now holds a record of winning 29 of his 34 professional fights (2 Draws), with 22 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, revealed he mentioned it to the officiating referee, Joe Cortez, but there was no use so he head-butted Mayweather in
frustration.
“I did the headbutt, but only because I told Cortez, twice, that [Mayweather] used the elbow on my eyebrow, my right eyebrow. I told him 'Cortez, Cortez, elbow, elbow' and he said 'fight out of it' and Mayweather was smiling at me and I said 'alright, boom.'
But after that I apologized and lost a point,” Ortiz told Marcus Chekhanovskiy.
Though Mayweather did everything legally, a lot about the bout is being said. Let’s see if Mayweather gives Ortiz a chance to fight him again or not.
