Victor Ortiz says Floyd Mayweather never impressed him as a great boxer – Boxing news
The current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion, Victor Ortiz, claims the five-division world champion and the current World Boxing Council Emeritus World Super Welterweight Champion, Floyd Mayweather has never impressed him as a great boxer.
The 24-year-old Ortiz takes on Mayweather on Saturday, September 17, 2011 in a much-anticipated 12-round bout for the WBC title at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
Ortiz said the undefeated American legend Mayweather, who holds a record of winning all of his 41 professional fights, with 25 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, is a good fighter but not a great fighter.
Ortiz, who is the winner of 29 of his 33 professional fights (2 Draws), in which 22 of his wins came by the way of a knockout, mentioned the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Sugar Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins and Zab Judah as his idols. However, when it came
to Mayweather, Ortiz said he is just another fighter to him.
Ortiz said, “You know what, Floyd is a good fighter. But I've never thought he was great, ever since I was a kid. Oscar was one of those for me. Mosley was definitely one of those for me. Bernard Hopkins was one of those for me. In his prime, Zab Judah was
one of those for me. And Floyd, not in his prime, not in his come up, not in his anything, he's ever been that to me.”
In the end Ortiz vowed he will knock Floyd ‘Pretty Boy’ Mayweather out and will break his unbeaten record.
“I hope the actual Floyd Mayweather shows up,” Ortiz said. “I don't want a Mayweather that's lost his speed or power. He's got that beautiful mouth that just never stops, but I'm going to knock him out.”
Mayweather, who was formerly rated as the number one pound-for-pound boxer in the world by most sporting news and websites, is one of the Pay-Per-View kings. Therefore, all eyes will be on his bout with Ortiz on Saturday, as people desperately want to see
whether Mayweather can still protect his record or not.
