Victor Ortiz scheduled to take on Josesito Lopez in a 12-round title bout - Boxing News
Victor Ortiz, the former WBC welterweight champion, will take on an opponent of almost equal stature in the form of Josesito Lopez, the former NABF light welterweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will be held on June 23, 2012 and will have the vacant
WBC silver welterweight title up for grabs.
The duo will headline the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions. The ring for the showdown will be set up at Staples Center situated in Los Angeles, California, United States and will also witness Humberto Soto
and Lucas Martin Matthysse take on each other for the vacant WBC Continental Americas light welterweight title while constituting the co-main event.
Victor and Lopez recently met at the pre-bout press conference and shared their thoughts about the fight and about each other. Ortiz, 25, has been in a total 34 bouts and emerged victorious in 29.
Currently ranked as world number seven, Victor has pinned 22 of his opponents by knockout and is coming from a fourth-round knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather Junior. Also known as ‘The Vicious’, Ortiz has collected wins over many big names such as Andre
Berto, Vivian Harris, Nate Campbell, Antonio Diaz and others.
While sharing his excitement on the engagement, Victor stated, “I’m fighting Josesito Lopez on June 23, who I’ve been training for and ignoring everyone else possible. There’s a dangerous fighter in front of me who is on the same path as I was a year ago
before I fought (Andre) Berto, but the difference here is I’m too hungry to let my chance go. If he wants to go to war, we’ll go to war. If he wants to box, then we’ll box. It doesn’t really matter. I’m there to take what is rightfully mine.”
Lopez, Victor’s Saturday night opponent, has also been in a total 34 bouts and boasts 29 wins just like Ortiz. However, Josesito has collected just 17 wins by knockout and therefore is a bit overshadowed by Victor’s knockout proficiency.
Josesito is also coming from a split decision loss to Jessie Vargas and is looking forward to make a comeback on the win track. As far as the comparison is concerned, Victor has a clear upper hand, as he has taken on opponents with far better experience
than those taken on by Lopez.
The bout will be an exciting one as both men are coming from a loss and above all the clash will have the apex divisional title up for grabs, definitely a great trophy for the winner of the bout.
