Victoria Azarenka: I'm just tired – Tennis News
World number one, Victoria Azarenka, bends down for the first time this season at the hands of the seventh-ranked French contestant, Marion Bartoli, in the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. On Wednesday, the biggest upset of the tournament was registered when the defending champion stooped to the French in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
Azarenka was unbeaten for 26 matches before this encounter. This is what she had to say after her first loss in 2012, “Everybody wanted to be the first one to beat me. I think it's pretty normal. When I was going to play against the number one player in the world, I also tried to do the same. Two days ago I could turn it around and today I couldn't. But it's not going stop me from working hard.”
She further added, “I'm just tired. This is expected. But what can you do? That was supposed to happen one day. I couldn't keep going all the way. To play these tournaments back-to-back is really difficult physically." So, it all goes down to the fatigue issues. Everyone is complaining about the hectic schedule that tennis runs in these days but no action is taken to lower the number of tournaments being played because it will also diminish the outcome as well as viewership of tennis all across the globe.
However, the Belarusian tennis ace has registered the second best season start winning streak. Swiss legendary tennis icon, Martina Hingis, still holds the best unbeaten run at the start of the season 1997; 37-0.
Azarenka was a bit angry at questions being bombarded upon her about the ‘dismissal of her purple patch’ and reacted with some discomfort stating that she is not a superhuman to not lose at all. It is a part of the game and this defeat will have no effect in the upcoming encounters.
With this result, Miami will witness a new champion this year. The most deserving winner at the moment is the Russian former world number one, Maria Sharapova, who squares off against the Dane starlet, Caroline Wozniacki, for a spot in the final of the tournament.
