Victoria Azarenka advances with a solid victory over Robert Vinci – French Open 2011
World number four Victoria Azarenka displayed some high quality tennis here in Paris on Saturday as she eased past Italian and 30th seed Roberta Vinci 6-3, 6-2 to book a fourth round berth at the 2011 French Open.
The Belarusian sensation started off in fine fashion and continued to improve her game play with the progress of the match. She smashed a ferocious backhand winner down the line to end the contest after only one hour and six minutes
of play.
Seeded fourth at the tournament, Azarenka has looked in commanding form since the Women’s Tennis Association tournament has started. In her opening match, she defeated Alberta Brianti 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Her second round victim was
French Iryna Bremond who received a 6-3, 6-4 thrashing from the Sony Ericsson Open Champion. She certainly seemed to have carried over that winning momentum into the third round as she broke the challenger at regular intervals to establish complete control
over the battle.
Serving with extreme accuracy and precision, the Belarusian achieved an impressive 79 per cent first serve conversion to take control of rallies. Azarenka broke the serve in the very first game of the match. From there onwards,
she did not look back and created all sorts of problems for her opponent.
A second break of serve extended her game score lead to 5-2 in the set and although Vinci broke back one in the set she was unable to stop her from taking a deserving set score lead 1-0.
Quarterfinalist at the 2009 Roland Garros, Azarenka raised her playing level even further in the following set. Converting two out two break chances in the match, she made Vinci run for her money. A clever drop shot in the eight
game of the set made three match points available to her.
She converted the first one after forcing an error from her opponent to take the match in straight sets. The 21-year old will take on Kaia Kanepi or Ekaterina Makarova in her next match-up.
