Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams too strong at the Australian Open 2013 – Tennis News
World number one, Victoria Azarenka, and the American number one, Serena Williams, crushed their opponents with bagels at the Australian Open 2013, first of the four Grand Slam events taking place in Melbourne, Australia. The Belarusian top ranked star slaughtered
Eleni Daniilidou with a 6-1, 6-0 victory while Williams recorded a 6-1, 6-2 success against Garbine Muguruza to book spots in the third round on Thursday.
Seeded top at this event, Azarenka displayed top notch performance to crush Daniilidou in their third encounter. The players last battled each other at the Fed Cup two years ago and after stealing this show, the Belarusian improved to a 2-1 record in the
head-to-head series against the Greek.
Azarenka stated in a post match press conference after overpowering the Greek challenger:
"I felt really good - I enjoyed the way I was so focused. It was definitely something I stepped up from my first match, just trying to stay in the zone and execute all of my shots. I was just trying to make everything happen out there today, and that's what
I'm the most happy about."
The 23-year-old reeled off the opening five games in a row before Daniilidou could come on the score sheet. She maintained her intensity and went on seven-game killing spree, eventually stealing the limelight in less than an hour.
Up next for the highest ranked player of this tournament, Azarenka is the American challenger, Jamie Hampton.
Ranked third in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Williams carried her first round momentum into the Rod Laver Arena. She required 75 minutes to record this straight set victory and progress.
The American stated in a courtside interview after pocketing the match:
"I didn't feel anything today. Obviously when you go out to play you're heavy on adrenaline and you're really pumped up. Usually I feel injuries after the match, but so far so good. I felt better than I ever dreamed of expecting to feel.”
Next in queue for Williams is the Japanese contender, Ayumi Morita, who also bagged a bagel against Germany’s Annika Beck to set up this encounter.
