Victoria Azarenka blows away Shahar Peer in round two – Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2012
Reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, showed no mercy in disposing of the 54th ranked Israeli tennis ace, Shahar Peer, in the second round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, on Wednesday. The top
seed took barely 55 minutes to registered a cracking 6-1, 6-2, victory over the bleak opponent in an authoritative fashion.
It was a completely one-sided contest being played on the outdoor clay courts of Rome, Italy, with Azarenka dominating every second of it. The 22-year-old Belarusian exhibited yet another display of high quality tennis and her
sublime form of the season to hunt down Peer comprehensively. She last defeated the Israeli contender in 2011 Apia international Sydney, in Australia and her Wednesday’s victory propelled her to a 4-0 lead in the head-to-head record against Peer.
Azarenka used her fiery serve as her primary weapon of destruction, banging 85 per cent on target and breaking her opponent four out of seven times en route to victory. She dropped just five points on her first serve, clinching
28 out of 33. Her phenomenal return game earned her 16 out of 31 return points on her opponent’s serve and the top seed cruised to victory in style.
On the other hand, Peer’s error-ridden game play didn’t allow her to have any sort of impact on the game. The unseeded Israeli kept coughing crucial faults on regular occasions, with her shots landing long and wide of the court
on most occurrences. Peer utterly failed to craft a single break opportunity in the entire matchup and had no option but to submit to eh fury of the world number one in straight sets.
The Belarusian onslaught initiated right from the beginning and Azarenka raced away to 3-0 in the opening 10 minutes of play. The top seed Belarusian kept exerting pressure on the Israeli opponent and as a result, she stung in
the sixth game to reach a commanding lead of 5-1. She served out of the set to register a breadstick at 6-1 to get one up in the match.
Peer managed to hold her opening two serves in the following set but Azarenka was targeting to wrap up the proceedings as quickly as possible. The Belarusian nailed two successive break points in the fifth and seventh games to
seal her 35th victory of the running season at 6-2.
Despite of a resounding victory in the second round, Azarenka was struck by a shoulder injury and was forced to pull out of the Rome Masters in dismay. It was really heartbreaking news for the tennis lovers all over the world but
it has also creating new openings for other players to get their hands on glory.
