Victoria Azarenka breezes past Elena Vesnina to enter round two – French Open 2013
Former world number one, Victoria Azarenka from Belarusian, got the better of the Russian contender, Elena Vesnina, with a breadstick at the Roland Garros 2013.
She jolted down a 6-1, 6-4 victory against the Russian to secure a spot in the round of 64 at this major clay court tournament taking place in Paris, France.
Seeded third in this event, Azarenka showed her true colours to outsmart Vesnina in their fourth encounter. The challengers last battled each other at the China Open and after clinching this match, the Belarusian improved to a 4-0 lead in the head-to-head
series against Vesnina.
The Belarusian number one, Azarenka played carefully in the start. She got the coveted break in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. After the Russian came on the score sheet in the fourth game, Azarenka maintained her intensity and clinched the opener
with a breadstick in almost half hour.
Azarenka kept momentum rolling in the following set. She cashed a break opportunity in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. The Belarusian squandered her edge in the sixth game but broke her opponent’s serve again, consequently sealing the set by winning
six games to four.
On the whole, the world number three clobbered a lower first serve share of 70 per cent as opposed to her rival’s 75 per cent but superbly conquered 31 out of 40 points on it. In addition to this, she hammered 21 winners, hit four aces and made only 13 unforced
errors. Furthermore, the Belarusian amazingly ward off four out of five breakpoints she came across and ruled the match.
Up next for Azarenka is the high flying German, Annika Beck, in the round of 64. The German trashed the Czech qualifier, Sandra Zahlavova, with a breadstick, to set-up this epic battle.
Beck capitalised on two break opportunities early in the opening set, subsequently sealing it with a 6-2 victory. She lifted her game in the following set and cruised to a 4-0 lead. The German broke her rival’s serve again in the last game and pocketed the
match with a 6-2, 6-1 score line.
