Victoria Azarenka climbs to the number one spot for the second time in 2012 – Tennis News
Belarusian tennis ace, Victoria Azarenka, is no more a former world number one. She is the reigning world number one now after the early fall of the Russian superstar, Maria Sharapova, who failed to save points from the Wimbledon
Championships.
Sharapova ended as the runners-up last year at All England Lawn Tennis Club and this year, she was the top seed performer yet faced a cracking upset at the hands of the German tennis ace, Sabine Lisicki, in the fourth round of
the Wimbledon Championships.
It was a terrible ending to a very promising start for the Russian who was eager to put a cherry on top of her first French Open title in Paris, France. However, her dream was shattered into pieces when the German professional
out of nowhere explored her prolific form and outsmarted her in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
So, it opened the first place slot for Radwanska and Azarenka; number three and number two ranked players during Wimbledon respectively. Both players fell for the American number one, Serena Williams, in the final and semi-final
respectively confirming the reigning Australian Open Champion’s number one spot in the world.
Women Tennis Association Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Stacey Allaster said, “Victoria's 2012 season has been spectacular; claiming her maiden Grand Slam title, becoming the first Belarusian to hold the World No.1 ranking,
and compiling one of the best win streaks in WTA history. Victoria's determination and consistency distinguishes her as one of the elite athletes in our game, and has allowed her to return to the top of the rankings."
It is another chance for Azarenka to prove it to the world that she is the deserving world number one and can retain her spot for a substantial period of time. However, she will always be having a strong competition from the three
inferior ranked players, Radwanska, Sharapova and Williams. They will have a go at her throne and most probably, it will be the Russian superstar who will be hungry to reclaim her lost spot from the Belarusian tennis ace.
The difference of points between the top ranked Azarenka and the fourth ranked Williams are just 1430 points. So, the competition is tough amongst the Top-4 athletes.
