Victoria Azarenka competes for Rogers Cup to regain her lost Olympic glory-Tennis News
World’s top ranked professional, Victoria Azarenka, will compete in the Rogers Cup, beginning from Tuesday in Toronto, Canada. The prestigious tournament comprises of the elite tennis performers, aiming to bag home glory
at the WTA Premier 5 event.
The Belarusian tennis idol secured a bronze medal in the London Olympics by defeating the Russian beauty, Maria Kirilenko, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Earlier in the semi-finals, she received an upset of 6-1, 6-2 at the hands
of American champion, Serena Williams, on the courts of All-England-Clubs.
In a post match press conference, she informed the media, “It is not easy to regroup mentally because you want to celebrate a bit, but you have no time. You have to go back to the tennis court and practice. But I’m happy
to be here. I can’t wait to start this tournament and just play tennis again.”
The draws for the Toronto event were announced after the London Olympics and the 23-year-old tennis icon is expecting to face a tough competition. She might have to face the fifth seeded Czech tennis ace, Petra Kvitova, or
if the situation works out well for the Belarusian, she might contest against the ninth seeded, Marion Bartoli, in the quarter-final of the tournament.
One of the biggest threats to Azarenka is the Russian tennis ace, Maria Sharapova. She is amongst the top favourites this season due to her excellent run of form. She is the silver medallist of the London Olympics, as she
received a disappointing upset of 0-6, 1-6, at the hands of Williams in the final. Therefore, Sharapova is ready to reclaim her top rank by winning the tournament.
The second seeded, Agnieszka Radwanska, is also holding on the Top-3 rankings. Although she could not perform to the best of her abilities in the Great Games but she has the potential to secure lead over this year’s reigning
world champions.
The Belarusian further added, “It’s really exciting, we’re all showing consistent tennis through the year. We’re all winning tournaments. It’s exciting for people to watch when its close and we’re doing our best competing
against each other. It’s definitely going to be interesting by the end of the year.”
Azarenka’s morale is high for the Rogers Cup and has faith in her skills. She won the Australian Open the same time earlier this year and kicked start her journey to the top and this event might just be her lucky strike again.
