Victoria Azarenka crushes Sofia Arvidsson in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open
World number five, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus blew away her second round opponent, Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden with the utmost ease to make it to the next round of the Mutua Madrid Open, being played at the Park Manzanares in Madrid,
Spain on Monday. The fourth seeded Belarusian took merely forty six minutes to wind up her straight sets victory at 6-1, 6-1, to dispense out Arvidsson from the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) World Tour event.
The two competitors had faced each other at Pentage way back in 2005, when Azarenka defeated the Swede rival in straight sets. The fourth seed continued her sheer dominance over Arvidsson in Madrid as well and dropped just two
games in the entire matchup en route to victory. She took the reins of the contest right from the first minute and kept orchestrating the game till the end.
27-year-old Swede veteran lacked agility, a skill brilliantly displayed by her opponent throughout the competition. Arvidsson broke serve once, which was in the first set, but suffered six break points from the Belarusian opponent
in the game. Her bleak serve wasn’t good enough to contain the mighty Azarenka, who gave absolutely no chance to the Swede to get into the game. A total of 76 points were played in the contest, with Azarenka clinching 51 and Arvidsson following her with just
25 to end on the losing side.
Two double faults were conceded by Azarenka in the opener but they didn’t cost her much, as she continued to exhibit her typical aggression to overwhelm her opponent. The Belarusian launched a series of attacking moves upon the
Swede rival and stung four serve breaks to seal the first set at 6-1 to get the upper hand in the contest.
Thing turned even worse for Arvidsson in the following set as had to suffer an early serve break to get onto her back foot. Azarenka reeled off all of her first serve points and stung two out of four break points to drive Arvidsson
out of the competition. She faced no serve breaks from her opponent, who crumbled under the pressure of defeat. The Belarusian wrapped up victory at 6-1 in the 46thminute to move onto the third round of the Mutua Madrid open.
Up next for Azarenka is the Spanish wildcard, Arantxa Parra Santonja in the third round at Madrid. Santonja upset the 13th seed Andrea Petkovic of Germany in the second round to meet the Belarusian.
