Victoria Azarenka defeated Serena Williams to win the title – Qatar Total Open 2013
Belarusian tennis diva, Victoria Azarenka, lost the world number one spot to Serena Williams but she had her revenge on Sunday evening before leaving the throne. She outclassed Williams in the final of Qatar Total Open 2013 to
break her 10-match losing streak against the American powerhouse. She settled the three-setter at 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-3, to lift her second WTA title of the 2013 season in style.
Azarenka hadn’t won a single match against Williams since 2009 Miami Masters final and she wasn’t expected to take the better of the American number one on Sunday either. However, the outgoing world number one proved everyone wrong
and unleashed her fury against the second seeded opponent. The 23-year-old Belarusian improved her head-to-head record to 2-11 against Williams after her Sunday’s victory.
"I won't say I didn't feel pressure, I was just really into the match and really focused on what I had to do," Azarenka said in her post match reviews. "Near the end she saved a match point with a good serve - that's what you normally
expect to get from Serena when she's in trouble - a bullet. But it wasn't a big deal, really - I just had to keep my composure and make another opportunity and create another match point.
And on this one compared to their last nine? "I just did everything better today,"
After winning the opening set in the tie-breaker, Azarenka went under the cosh in the second set. Williams nailed a break point in the third and then again in the seventh game to bag the equaliser at 6-2. However, the top seeded
Belarusian broke early in the final set to impose a 3-0 lead and held on to it until the conclusion of the match at 6-3.
Williams confirmed her world number one spot after she outplayed Petra Kvitova in the semi-final of the tournament. She was to replace Azarenka’s number one spot in the WTA Premier Rankings from Monday but the Belarusian made a
very strong statement by defeating her in the title match. Azarenka made it very clear that her hunt for the world number one spot is not over and she will hit back at Williams to claim her lost throne in the future tournaments.
