Victoria Azarenka does away with Agnieszka Radwanska to reach the final – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
Yet another semi-final victory this season for the belligerent world number one, Victoria Azarenka, as she outmuscled the third ranked Pole tennis ace, Agnieszka Radwanska, at the mutual Madrid Open on Saturday afternoon. The top
seed Belarusian powered her way to victory by bagging the two-setter, 6-2, 6-4, in an assertive fashion and earning a title shot at the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event being played in Madrid, Spain.
It was Azarenka’s sixth consecutive triumph over Radwanska in the 2012 WTA season, giving her a 11-3 lead in the all-time head-to-head series against her. She is the hot favourite for winning the Madrid clay-court title and it
was already anticipated that Radwanska would fail once again to halt the winning impetus of the fiery Belarusian. The Pole number one could hang in the contest for barely 79 minutes before she was left with no option but to submit in straight sets.
Radwanska hasn’t won a single set against Azarenka in her last three matches prior to Saturday and carried on the similar trend in the semi-final battle to fall out of the coveted tournament. The world number three failed to cash
in the vital opportunities presented by Azarenka in the match and it proved extremely taxing for her. She frittered away four break points and converted just three of them in reply to Azarenka’s six cracking breaks of serve.
The top seed Belarusian coughed six double faults in the match but her points winning proficiency was amazing throughout the competition. She lost just six first serve points, securing 23 out of 29 and then further clinched 15
out of 35 return points on her opponent’s serve to come out as the dominant victor. A total of 111 points were played in the entire contest and Azarenka reigned supreme by winning 63, whilst Radwanska lagged behind with 48 points to finish on the losing side
in the end.
Azarenka will fight the winner of the other semi-final clash between the former world number one, Serena Williams and the Czech qualifier, Lucie Hradecka, in the final of the Madrid Open. Williams and Hradecka will compete the
semi-final battle later in the afternoon.
