Victoria Azarenka doubts she would be able to repeat 2012 performance next year – Tennis News
World number one, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, thinks it would be a difficult task for her to achieve again what she managed in 2012.
In this year, the Belarusian player had the best season of her career so far. The 23-year-old was second only to Serena Williams in the most titles winner list, as she grabbed six of them in 2012. She started the season ranked third in the world and ended
it at first position.
The Belarusian made the record for highest earned prize money in a single season, collecting a total of $7.9 million. The right-hander had an incredible winning percentage, having a win/loss record of 69–10 at the end of the season.
Azarenka shared that she will have pressure on her to match her achievements of this year in 2013. Though, the Belarusian beauty stated that she is motivated to repeat her feats and she is try her best to improve her game further.
She said while talking to reporters in Sao Paulo, “There’s more pressure as it will be a new year. What happened in 2012, I established a high standard, it will be difficult to repeat. But at least I’m motivated to try, let’s take one day at a time and see
what happens.”
Azarenka added, “When I wake up, I start to wonder how I can improve my game, what the new day might bring. I like [being No. 1], I worked very hard for it, but it’s not all I see.”
The Monte Carlo, Monaco resident made a brilliant beginning to her campaign in 2012, winning her first 26 matches. That amazing run resulted in four titles including Apia International Sydney, Australian Open, Qatar Ladies Open and BNP Paribas Open.
The Belarusian also did well for her country at the London Olympics, claiming Bronze Medal in singles and Gold with Max Mirnyi in the mixed doubles event.
She added China Open and Generali Ladies Linz events to her title list in the ending weeks of the season. The 6ft tall player lost seven of her matches at the hands of Serena and Sharapova either in the semi-final of final.
Azarenka is taking part in the Gillette Federer Tour in Sao Paulo, Brazil these days. She defeated Serena during this exhibition event a couple of days back. The Belarusian participant played like a true world number one and defeated Serena in straight sets
6-3.7-5.
