Victoria Azarenka dumps Elena Vesnina to reach the quarter-finals – Australian Open 2013
Defending champion, Victoria Azarenka, carried on her onslaught at Melbourne Park, Australia, and forced her way into the quarter-final round of the Grand Slam Down Under. The world number one devastated the Russian underdog, Elena
Vesnina, in the fourth round brawl on Monday afternoon with double breadstick. She took merely 57 minutes to register an assertive score line of 6-1, 6-1, booking a berth in the quarter-final draw of the Australian Open.
With the kind of sublime form she is having at the moment, Azarenka was already anticipated to record such cracking victory against Vesnina. The world number 47 stood no match against the top ranked Belarusian and fell very cheaply.
Vesnina could barely win two games in the entire matchup, suffering six break points at the hands of the defending champion Azarenka. She had a reasonable serve game in the contest but the an all-round onslaught from the world number one completely destroyed
her, throwing her out of the Grand Slam campaign in a dismal manner. Azarenka was very pleased with her victory and aims at displaying even better play in her next encounter.
"I was focused and in control from the beginning," Azarenka said afterwards. "That was important for me. I feel like I'm improving from match to match. I just want to keep going the same way."
Azarenka will take on the former world number three Russian veteran, Svetlana Kuznetsova, in the quarter-final round. Kuznetsova has been the real surprise package of the tournament so far, beating all the odds to reach the last-eight
stage of the mega event. She outplayed the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, in her most recent match to book a date with the reigning world number one, Azarenka.
"I can see Sveta has come back much fresher, much stronger," Azarenka said. "She knows how to handle the big stages, big tournaments - she's a Grand Slam champion, as well. It's definitely an exciting match for me to be in. I'm
sure it's going to be really tough. I definitely have to be ready."
World number two, Maria Sharapova, third seed Serena Williams, fourth ranked Agnieszka Radwanska and the Chinese number one Li Na have also qualified for the round of eight.
