Victoria Azarenka dumps Roberta Vinci to claim a quarter-final berth – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012
Belligerent world number one, Victoria Azarenka, registered yet another thumping victory in the third round of Toray Pan Pacific Open on Wednesday. She simply outclassed the Italian veteran, Roberta Vinci, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to book a spot in the quarter-final round of the WTA Premier-level event in Tokyo, Japan.
The top seeded Belarusian had no troubles to put aside the limited resistance from Vinci and confidently carried on her voyage to glory. Her mighty forehand worked perfectly for her and she fired a number of assertive winners all around the court to end the 14th seed’s run. Azarenka sustained her clean sheet against Vinci, posting a 3-0 lead in the all-time head-to-head series. Her earlier two victories over the Italian came at 2009 and 2011 French Open.
Vinci has been absolutely phenomenal in the doubles category, along with her compatriot Sara Errani, and her runs in the singles category have also been quite impressive this season. She had a WTA championship title under her belt and was expected to put forth a much tougher resistance to Azarenka in the third round. However, her bleak game play couldn’t withstand the ballistic ground strokes from the world number one and she had to submit in straight sets to fall out of the tournament.
Top ranked Azarenka was ever-impressive with her serve game, delivering 64 per of it on target and clinching 25 out of 37 first serve points. She crafted 9 break opportunities but only five conversions proved sufficient to drive Vinci out of Pan Pacific Open. The top seed Belarusian faced 10 break points in total and successfully defended eight of them, not letting the Italian veteran to gather any pace in the contest.
Azarenka will continue her journey to her fifth WTA title of the season and will have to go through the German tennis prodigy, Angelique Kerber, in the quarter-final rounds. The world number six, Kerber, registered a commanding double-breadstick victory against the Pole youngster, Urszula Radwanska, in the third round. The German diva has already suffered two cracking defeats at the hands of Azarenka this season and will battle her to beat the odds.
