Victoria Azarenka dumps Samantha Stosur to claim the title – Qatar Total Open 2012
Belligerent world number one, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, carried on with her dominating run of form this season, defeating the top ranked Aussie veteran, Samantha Stosur, in the final of Qatar Total Open on Sunday. The top seed
Belarusian claimed her third successive championship title of the year by outclassing Stosur in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to lift the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Tour trophy in Doha, Qatar.
Unbeaten in 2012, Azarenka exhibited another display of sheer dominance and class to overwhelm her opponent in the most assertive manner. She spared barely three games for Stosur and ravaged her in merely 67 minutes to register
her 17th consecutive victory of the season. The top ranked beauty queen faced no real challenge throughout the contest and eased her way to glory in the most authoritative fashion.
"I think that one point at the beginning of the match really saved my butt a little bit - you know, I hit the net," Azarenka said. "But I was trying to be really aggressive and not let her command it, because that's what she likes
to do. She has a huge serve, and the first shot, that's where she puts the opponent on the run, and you run so far behind the baseline. I tried to take that away from her. It feels amazing to win this title. I have been coming here quite a few times, also
for the WTA Championships, and I never even reached the final, so for me it's extra special to win here. I really like this tournament a lot."
The final score of the match tells the story itself. Azarenka stung five out of eight break points in the match, with her Aussie opponent utterly failing to go even closer to create a break opportunity in the entire contest. The
top ranked Belarusian dropped just six points on her serve, bagging 20 out of 26 points and clinched half of the return points en route to victory. Her mighty forehand and ear-deafening roars clearly depicted her intensity in the game and she absolutely annihilated
Stosur to get 6-0 against her in the all-time head-to-head series.
No doubt Stosur was rated as the underdog while stepping on courts against the in-form world number one but a far better effort was anticipated from the world number five in the title round. She failed to live up to the expectations
of her fans and submitted the contest in a dismal manner in the end.
