Victoria Azarenka geared up to secure a win after her Olympic bronze – Rogers Cup 2012
Reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, will be contesting against 43rdranked Austrian Tamira Paszek in the Rogers Cup 2012, the hard courts championship in Toronto, Canada. The Belarusian is eyeing to carry
on her winning impetus from the London Olympics on the hard courts of Montreal on Friday.
Azarenka leads over Paszek by 3-1 in the head-to-head series, registering straight sets victories in all the previous encounters. The 14th seeded Austrian defeated Julia Goerges of Germany in straight
sets, 6-2, 6-1, in the first round of the tournament earlier this week to book a date with the world number one Belarusian.
The 23-year-old star is hopeful to bag home the title since the Olympic champion, Serena Williams, will not be playing in the Montreal Masters. Williams upset the Belarusian tennis ace in the Olympics semi-finals by 6-1,
6-2. This made the event seemed simpler for her than before.
In a press conference, she told the media, “She was downright unbeatable in London. Her game was fantastic. It was difficult to play against her. (The Olympics) was something special for me. There was a lot of emotion, we'll
have to see what impact it might have when we get back into the tour routine.”
She further added, "It's not easy to regroup mentally because you want to celebrate a bit, but you have no time. You have to go back to the tennis court and practice. I am happy to be here. I can't wait to start this tournament
and just play tennis again."
Her chances further improved after the sudden withdrawal of the world number two, Maria Sharapova, from the tournament due to a stomach virus. The Russian silver medallist was swapped with Galina Voskoboeva in the tournament
draw.
Nonetheless, the journey to the top of Toronto Masters will not be easy, as she will have to face the other top class tennis aces to sustain her world rankings. She might face the second seeded, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the
finals as she is the top most contender in the tournament. The Polish number one could not perform well in the Olympics finals, but she looks hopeful to win the tournament.
However, Azarenka is determined to secure a lead in the event this year. She returns after the Olympics with a bronze medal and mature game plan. For the Belarusian professional, the Roger Cup is going to be a lucky start
for a classic end to her current year.
