Victoria Azarenka hammers Heather Watson in the third round – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
Belligerent world number one, Victoria Azarenka, continues to annihilate her opponents on the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) World Tour and registered a thumping victory over the British wildcard entrant, Heather Watson. The
top seed Belarusian outshined the 19-year-old Watson in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, in the third round clash of the Sony Ericsson Open on Sunday.
Being a part of the WTA Premier Mandatory events, the contest was staged on the outdoor hard courts of Miami, Florida, with the top-ranked Azarenka putting up yet another display of sheer domination and class. The 22-year-old Belarusian
sustained her clean sheet in the 2012 season, extending her winning streak to 25-0 after dumping Watson in the third round. It was her third straight victory over the 19-year-old Briton, giving her a 3-0 edge against her in the all-time head-to-head series.
The 129th ranked Watson was least expected to give any tough time to the ballistic world number one and it happened the same. She was completely blown away by the fury of Azarenka in the opening set, utterly failing
to pocket a single game and dropping her serve three times in a row to suffer a bagel set. Watson finally won two games in the following set but it was far too late for the Briton and she had to submit the matchup in the 20th minute of the second
hour to end her voyage in Miami.
Azarenka banged in 65 per cent of her serve on target, clinching 20 out of 30 first serve points and nailing six out of 14 serve breaks en route to victory. She went for a nine-game killing spree right away to bag the opener 6-0
and holding a lead of 3-0 in the second set. Her winning impetus was finally broken in the fourth game of the second set when Watson registered her lone break point of the match to reach 1-3. Another serve break from Azarenka in the very next game put her
in charge once again and she went on to wrap up victory at 6-2.
Azarenka will face off against the 16th seed Slovak, Dominika Cibulkova, in the fourth round of the tournament.
