Victoria Azarenka hammers Julia Goerges in the second round brawl – Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2013
Belligerent Belarusian, Victoria Azarenka, hammered the German beauty queen, Julia Goerges, in the second round of Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Wednesday afternoon. The third seeded diva took just 61 minutes to wrap up victory
in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, to reach the third round of the WTA Premier-level event in the most assertive manner.
It was Azarenka’s fifth consecutive victory against the 25th ranked German, giving her a 5-1 lead in the all-time head-to-head series. The world number three was anticipated as the hot favourite for winning the match
but Goerges wasn’t expected to fall so cheaply. The German diva has an excellent record on clay surface but all her skills seemed to fade away against the might of Azarenka. The Belarusian number one allowed Goerges to win merely two games in the entire match
and disposed her of to reach the pre-quarter-final stage of the tournament in style.
"The first match of a tournament is always difficult, so I knew it was important to have my focus and concentration from the start," Azarenka said. "Julia is a very tough player, but my game was really together out there and everything
was working for me tonight. I'm very pleased with the victory. I just need to build up match by match," Azarenka said. "Every player is tough so it's never easy to win matches, but I'm fresh and motivated, and I'm excited to be playing - that's really the
main thing. I'm just trying to improve every day and I hope to continue this passage."
The contest took off in classic ‘Azarenka’ style, as the former world number one rocketed away to 4-0 in no time. Goerges was seen all over the place and her bleak baseline defence wasn’t good enough to contain the fury of the
Belarusian. Azarenka held her serve throughout the set and wrapped up the proceedings at 6-2.
With the opener under her belt, the third seeded contender went for a six-game rampage in the following set. Azarenka broke the German serve three times on the trot and concluded her 20th victory of the running season
with a bagel, 6-0.
