Victoria Azarenka hammers Ksenia Pervak to reach the semis – Brisbane International 2013
Belligerent world number one, Victoria Azarenka, blasted her way into the semi-finals of the season-opening Brisbane International on Thursday. She hammered the 103rd ranked Kazakh contestant, Ksenia Pervak, in the quarter-final
brawl, taking merely 69 minutes to conclude the match with the final score line of 6-1, 6-0.
It was yet another display of Azarenka’s sheer dominance over an underdog opponent. The 23-year-old Belarusian played her natural game and just cruised through the contest without any serious challenge from Pervak. Azarenka barely
spared one game for her opponent in the entire matchup, registering a breadstick and then a bagel set to register her second victory of the 2013 season. She began the New Year with an assertive 6-3, 6-3 victory over the German tennis ace, Sabine Lisicki, in
the opening round of the tournament. Her belligerence was raised to the much devastating level in Thursday’s matchup against Pervak and she literally gave away nothing to the Kazakh competitor all the way to victory.
Azarenka struck in the very first game of the match, breaking Pervak right away to impose a 1-0 lead. The world number one went on for a five-game killing spree, breaking her rival three times in succession and mounting a 5-0 lead.
Pervak finally made notice of her presence in the competition and broke the top seeded Belarusian in the sixth game to reach 1-5. It was the only game she won in the entire contest and Azarenka won all the rest.
The 23-year-old Belarusian held her opening serve in the following set and then broke Pervak in every single game to follow. She nailed three break points to conclude the contest with a bagel set at 6-0. She secured 10 out of 12
first serve points in the set and saved all the three break points she faced from the Kazakh opponent.
Azarenka double faulted four times in the match but 21 out of 28 first serve points and seven out of nine break point conversions were enough for her to post such an authoritative score line. She will face either Sloane Stephens
or Serena Williams in the semi-final round of the tournament later this week.
