Victoria Azarenka hints at missing Western & Southern Open – Tennis News
World number one, Victoria Azarenka, pulled out of the Rogers Cup due to a left knee injury. She entered the match against Tamira Paszek and survived six games but couldn’t continue further because the pain just got worse for the Belarusian who has had a very tough and hectic season already.
Talking to the reporters, Azarenka said, “It's unfortunate because I was really looking forward to playing here. I have really enjoyed being here. I tried yesterday and today it just got worse. I can't see the point of continuing to play if I can't give even 50% of my game.”
She further added, "I have to just stop and take a little bit of time off because I had absolutely no rest for a long period of time.”
It looked fine that the 23-year-old Belarusian was ready to contest in the upcoming events but the doubt was placed when the shrieking queen answered a question about her upcoming plans, “If I cannot play here, there is no chance for me to play anywhere else. My first goal is to get healthy and make sure I'm 100% ready to play the US Open."
It seems like she is not ready to participate in the Western & Southern Open at Cincinnati and needs some time for rehabilitation before the start of the year’s final Grand Slam Championship, the US Open, in New York.
The list of players that are currently injured is increasing day by day and the squad for Cincinnati is narrowing up as the likes of the former world number one, Maria Sharapova, has already withdrawn from the event due to stomach ailment and several players were forced to pull out of Rogers Cup which includes Maria Kirilenko (right leg injury), Flavia Pennetta (right wrist injury) and Simona Halep (left thigh injury).
It is a tough time for players as their bodies are fatigued out due to hectic tennis schedule. The inclusion of Olympics has made it worse for the top seeds. They have to play long events considering the superiority of their game play. Let’s hope no more causalities happen before the tournament commences in Cincinnati.
