Victoria Azarenka is bidding to defend his title at the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 – Tennis Special
World number one, Victoria Azarenka, is looking forward to defend her title at the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 and to beat Martina Hingis record of 37-0 win-loss from the start of the season. She is seeded top at this WTA (Women’s
Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event taking place at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Miami, United States.
The 22-year-old is on fire as she cruised into this hard court tournament without losing a single match this circuit. She is currently 23-0 this year and has won her first Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January. After bagging
the major, she rose to number one in the WTA Premier Rankings from number three and became the first to skip number two.
Azarenka started her 2012 campaign at the Apia International Sydney where she triumphed over Agnieszka Radwanska and Na Li to claim her first year-to-date title. The Belarusian then high-spiritedly entered the Melbourne Grand Slam
and blasted past her opponents in straight sets to book a final eight spot. She then tumbled over Radwanska and Kim Clijsters before devastating Maria Sharapova of Russian with a bagel in the final showdown.
She kept momentum rolling into the Qatar Ladies Open and slew the reigning US Open titlist, Samantha Stosur, in the final round to win her third straight tournament of the season.
The Belarusian remained undefeated at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, a Premier Mandatory event held in the first half of March.
"Last year was a learning experience for me," the blooming Belarusian said after winning the BNP Paribas Open. "Every loss I analyzed and step by step just built on everything, just daily hard work. I had a lot of tough losses
last year and so now I'm really trying to turn it around in my own favor. I never dreamed this would happen."
Azarenka blasted past several seeded players at the BNP Paribas Open before tumbling over the gorgeous Sharapova again in the title-round. She got the better of Agnieszka Radwanska, Julia Goerges, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Angelique
Kerber en route to the final showdown.
"She's really fit, as well, and you can sense she's playing with a lot of confidence when she's moving around the court and hitting the ball,” the former world number one, Sharapova, commented after her loss.
The Russian number one was runner-up at this Key Biscayne hard court tournament and was a finalist here last year, posing a major threat to Azarenka. She is not the only one who becomes a major obstacle in the untouchable Belarusian’s
route to defend her title as the Belgian number one, Kim Clijsters, is back in action. Not only this, former world number one, Serena and Venus Williams, are debuting at this tournament after a long injury absence. They may be out of action for a long time
but the Belarusian needs to play her best against them. Azarenka needs to focus on her hard hitting serves and should play her original game regardless of whom she is facing.
