Victoria Azarenka is flattered to be compared with Novak Djokovic – Tennis News
World number one, Victoria Azarenka, is flattered to be matched with the likes of the Serb world number one, Novak Djokovic. She stated, “Of course, it’s an honour to be compared to Novak, but I’m a long, long way from him.
I’m making my own way in this sport.”
It is good to see that the Belarusian tennis icon is not carried away from all the attention she is having since her first Major triumph in the finals of the Australian Open 2012 against the slender-legged Russian beauty
queen, Maria Sharapova. She is still unbeaten in 2012 and has won three back-to-back titles, including the season opener in Brisbane, the Australian Open and Dubai Total Open which was contested in Doha. It seems like the Belarusian is in no mood to allow
anyone to sneak near any titles this season, just like Djokovic bamboozled everyone by stacking titles one after another.
She further added, “There is more attention on me as number one but I’m not letting that pressure get to me.” She is the deserving world number one with all the traits of holding up to that spot for a longer period of time.
She is not criticized like the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, who never won a Grand Slam title in her life and still managed to hang on to that spot for over a year.
The most beautiful day in her life was the day when she won her maiden Grand Slam title in Melbourne, earlier this year. She not only gobbled up her first major win but also cruised to the top of the ranking surpassing the
likes of the Czech professional tennis ace, Petra Kvitova, who has recently pulled out of the Dubai Duty Free Championship due to illness.
This year, Azarenka has defeated the likes of Marion Bartoli, Agnieszka Radwanska, Li Na, Jelena Jankovic, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, Yanina Wickmayer and Samantha Stosur. All these players are recognized to be world
class athletes and Azarenka has been able to slay each one of them on different platforms. It shows the diversity of her game play and ability to absorb pressure in a big match situation. The way she bullied the former world number one, Sharapova, in the final
of the Australian Open was something that was absolutely stunning. She is definitely on route to some exciting performance and might be the Djokovic of women tennis in foreseeable future.
