Victoria Azarenka not getting pressurised due to World number one tag – Tennis News
Victoria Azarenka clinched her first Grand Slam at this year’s Australian Open after crushing three times Grand Slam champion, Maria Sharapova, in the title match. With that win, she rose to the top of the Sony Ericsson WTA Rankings.
Some players get weighed down by the pressure of being number one. All the attention and media hype, high expectations from a World’s top player puts one under pressure but Azarenka is not one of them. Rather, she has become more mature and looks like the
Grand Slam breakthrough has brought in her all the confidence in the world.
The Belarusian has not lost a single contest in this season, hammering her opponents in all the 23 matches. She has already captured four titles including Apia International Sydney, Australian Open, Qatar Total Open and BNP Paribas Open.
She has taken her game to a new level. Some experts and fans are even saying that she has gone so far superior to other players on the WTA Tour that she should now start playing at the ATP Tour. Such is the level of her dominance that she has been thrashing
the world number two, Sharapova, and the Russian is convincingly beating all the other players on the Tour. Azarenka has allowed the Russian to win a total of just eight games in the two matches played between these two this year.
In their most recent encounter, the Belarusian outclassed Sharapova in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to win the BNP Paribas Open last week.
The Belarusian mashed Sharapova in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 in the Australian Open final.
The former world number one added, "She's going through a period in her career where she's extremely confident, extremely solid. Nothing is really going wrong for her. Everything is a positive. When you're against her, you're playing against a good player
and you have to figure out how to beat them. It hasn't happened for me the last couple of times against her."
According to Azarenka, she has found the solution of dealing with all the pressure and expectations by focusing on one match at one time. This trick is already working quite well for her.
The Belarusian said, "I'm not thinking too much ahead, that I'm No. 1 and I have to continue winning or something like that. I'm just trying to be the best player and the best person I can be on every single day."
Azarenka is aiming to grab her fifth title of the season at the Sony Ericsson Open this fortnight.
