Victoria Azarenka overwhelms Maria Sharapova to win WTA tournament
Two starlets battled against each other in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tournament final held in California, with the girl from Belarus, with one of the strongest backhand shots, eventually claiming her first victory over her Russian counterpart since 2007.
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tournament has been exciting and full of thrills, as it was a bigger platform to perform and to rehearse the tennis skills before the beginning of the US Open Grand Slam. In the final match of the WTA tournament, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus showed her skills and matchless talent by grabbing a resounding victory over the ex world number one tennis ace Maria Sharapova (of Russia). Azarenka outclassed her veteran Russian rival in an exciting match and surpassed Sharapova’s talent in all the departments. This title was the first she has won this year, and it is very dear and special to her in all aspects. Azarenka beat Sharapova in straight sets by 6-4, 6-1 to win the hard-court event.
With this win, the 21 year old tennis ace will now be ranked 12th in the world. This young tennis starlet just celebrated her 21st birthday a day before the match, and the tournament title proved to be the best and most special birthday gift to her. She told the media after winning the match that it was a great day for her, and she hasn’t lost a single match since turning 21, and she felt great. She added that the win infused a lot of confidence and passion in her, especially as the US Open, the last Grand Slam event of the year, looms ahead.
Azarenka showed her matchless skill by outclassing Sharapova 6-4 in the first set and didn’t give a single chance to her opponent to secure a stronghold and broke her break points three times. The match proved to be a very tough one for the former world number one tennis sensation Maria Sharapova. Azarenka’s control over the court made Sharapova frustrated and she started to make unforced errors (she made 16 in the second set). Sharapova tried hard and gave her best, but it seemed like it was not her day, and her efforts went all in vain. Azarenka showed her calm and strong nerves and won the match in a very convincing and impressive manner.
This title is her fourth title of WTA, which is vivid proof of her splendid form over the hard court. After winning the tournament, Azarenka seemed relaxed and confident. She claimed that she was happy she was picking up her form and gaining confidence.
On the other hand, Sharapova seemed very disappointed with her performance and admitted the fact that her errors let Azarenka win the title very easily. Sharapova, who has just returned to the tennis court after suffering from shoulder injury, is still struggling to find the right winning chemistry for the match. She added that her serve wasn’t strong throughout the match and she will try her best to improve her performance as soon as possible.
"I started making unforced errors off her returns and she stepped it up, took advantage and started to get on a roll," she said. "I don't think I served that smart. I need a higher percentage of first serves, in general and particularly against her."
By winning the WTA tournament, Azarenka has surely proved herself as a strong contender for the upcoming Grand Slam event in New York. She is confident and can rock the court anytime.
