Victoria Azarenka overwhelms Michaella Krajicek to reach the third round – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
World number one, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, had no trouble in stamping her authority over the 71st ranked bleak opponent, Michaella Krajicek, in the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open on Friday. The belligerent
top-seed Belarusian took one hour and 42 minutes to wrap up the proceedings in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, marching into the third round of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event in Miami, Florida.
Although the scorecard hints a close competition between the two contestants, it was a fairly one-sided contest with Azarenka dominating all the way. The 22-year-old outsmarted the error-ridden game play of Krajicek with ease and
cruised through the both sets to sustain her unbeaten run in the 2012 season. She came to Miami with four championship titles already under her belt in this season and her impactful start in the second round depicts that she is certainly eyeing to bag another
trophy at this star-studded event.
Azarenka delivered 64 per cent of her serve on target, coughing six double faults and firing four aces in the match. She reeled off 32 out of 45 first serve points and was extremely efficient with her return game. She snatched
11 out of 26 return points on Krajicek’s 40 per cent accurate first serve. The Dutch veteran spilled out nine doubles faults to assist the world number one to victory. She converted three out of six break opportunities in the contest, while suffering six out
of 12 cracking ones from the aggressive Belarusian.
"She started to really go for her shots," Azarenka said of the late resistance from Krajicek. "I was up a break and she had nothing to lose, so she just went for her shots. She was really aggressive. I kind of stepped back and
was maybe waiting for her mistakes instead of creating my opportunities. I have to give her credit - she played great. I had to raise my level when I really needed it."
Azarenka will face off against the British wildcard entrant, Heather Watson, in her next matchup of the Sony Ericsson Open for a berth in the fourth round.
