Victoria Azarenka reclaims the world number one spot – Tennis News
Belarusian tennis ace, Victoria Azarenka, might have had a disappointing semi-final final loss at the Wimbledon Championships last week but she has still bagged enough points to rocket away to the world number one spot. The 22-year-old
has toppled the Russian beauty queen, Maria Sharapova, to reclaim her lost top spot in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings.
2012 has been a dream year for Azarenka, as she has topped the women’s rankings for the second time. The belligerent Belarusian is having an amazing winning record of 43-5 for the season, winning four WTA championship titles. Her
rise to the top was ensured with her maiden Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open final, when she outplayed Sharapova to become the world number one. She couldn’t sustain her ranking for a long time and lost her throne to the Russian last month. However,
her fine performance in the grass court Grand Slam has awarded the number one position to her once again.
"Every day, I work with my team to become the best player I can possibly be. To be listed among the other players who also reached No.1 is an honor," Azarenka said. "This year has already been the best of my career and I am looking
forward to the second half of the season."
Azarenka’s sorrow of losing the Wimbledon semi-final to Serena Williams was smoothened a bit with the latest release of the WTA Premier Rankings on Monday. She is right there on the top, followed by the surprising Pole contender,
Agnieszka Radwanska, on the second spot. The slender-legged Russian, Sharapova, suffered an early exit from Wimbledon and has fallen to the number three spot. The winner of ladies singles and doubles this year, American powerhouse, Serena Williams, has jumped
two ranks to claim the world number four place, whilst Samantha Stosur has sustained her fifth rank after a dismal run in London.
"Victoria's 2012 season has been spectacular," WTA Chairman & CEO Stacey Allaster said. "Claiming her maiden Grand Slam title, becoming the first Belarusian to hold the World No.1 ranking, and compiling one of the best win streaks
in WTA history.
Victoria's determination and consistency distinguishes her as one of the elite athletes in our game, and has allowed her to return to the top of the rankings."
Last year’s Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova fell in the quarter-final rounds this season and as a result, has slipped to the sixth position in the latest WTA ratings.
