Victoria Azarenka slaughters Jie Zheng in the third round – US Open 2012
Top seeded Belarusian tennis professional, Victoria Azarenka, demolished the Chinese small fry, Jie Zheng, in the third round of the US Open Championships on Friday. Azarenka pinned down a 6-0, 6-1 victory and rolled into
the quarter-finals of hard court Grand Slam event in Queens, New York City.
Talking to the reporters, Azarenka said, “I was expecting a tough match, but I felt like I really focused on each point and wasn't really aware of what the score was, I was just trying to keep that determination and keep
dominating her, not really letting her into the match, because I know she can turn things around. She has that type of game where she is a shot maker as well. It was very important to keep her away from that so she loses a little bit of courage. It was amazing
to play in front of this crowd, the biggest tennis stadium in the world.”
Ranked 28th in the WTA Premier rankings, Zheng commenced a sloppy start and was unable to hold her serve the entire time in the set. The reigning world number one re-ignited her spark and counterattacked
to snatch all the games in succession, nailing down her first set triumph with a bagel.
The subsequent set repeated the similar pattern and the 29-year-old Chinese participant seeming powerless in front of her rival’s serves. She miserably failed to manage a single breakthrough and lost by a 1-6 score line.
The right-hander Belarusian professional confidently marched forward to the fourth round of the mega event. She had a high serve precision of 82 percent, bagging eight of 14 first serve points. On the contrary, the Chinese
participant only pocketed four of the 14 first serves and fortunately frittered away the only break point offered to her.
The 23-year-old Belarusian hammered her 3-1 lead against Zheng in the head-to-head series. Previously in the year 2009 she demolished the Chinese veteran 6-1, 6-1 in the second round of the Toray Pan Pacific held on the hard
courts of Tokyo.
Azarenka is drawn for the next match against the Georgian tennis player Anna Tatishvili, who smashed Mandy Minella 7-5, 6-0 in the third round.
