Victoria Azarenka takes down Tamira Paszek in the quarterfinal clash – Wimbledon Championships 2011
World number five, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, continued with her ballistic form at the Wimbledon Championships, defeating Tamira Paszek of Austria in the quarter-final of the third Grand Slam tournament of the year.
As it was anticipated earlier, Azarenka had no real trouble in taking down the 80th ranked Austrian in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, taking merely one hour and twenty four minutes of play, booking a berth in her first ever
Grand Slam semi-final.
The fourth seed Belarusian displayed her typical aggressive tennis in the contest being played at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, and gave no time to let Paszek settle in the game. She
was very accurate with her serve and had a rock solid baseline defence to outplay her opponent.
It was the second time that Paszek got defeated at the hands of Azarenka in singles matchup. Last time these two faced each other was in Montreal in 2008, when the Belarusian defeated her in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, in the quarter-final
of the event. Azarenka was more brutal to Paszek in the Tuesday afternoon’s matchup and beat her in every segment of the game.
The fourth seed took the hold of the contest right from the beginning and never let Paszek bounce back in the game. Her stroke play was flawless and she conceded just eight unforced errors throughout the match, including two double
faults. Azarenka’s serve was broken once in the entire contest, while she stung five serve breaks en route to victory.
Paszek hung in the opening set for some time before the belligerent Belarusian broke her serve in the third game. The Austrian replied with a break point in the very next game but two more break point conversions from Azarenka
left her answerless, as she submitted the first set to her opponent at 3-6.
The Belarusian raced to 2-0 in the second set and carried on with her momentum to seal victory at 6-1, getting a pass to the semi-final draws of Wimbledon Championships for the first time.
“Looking at the rankings, everybody says I should have been in the semi-finals already,” Azarenka said after the match. “It was important I got through this match. I'm very happy to be in the semi-finals, and I’m looking forward
to working even harder.”
Azarenka will face the eighth seed Czech opponent, Petra Kvitova, for a place in the final of the Grand Slam tournament. Kvitova was victorious against the 32ndseed, Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2.
