Victoria Azarenka to meet Serena Williams in the semi-final – London Olympics 2012
Victoria Azarenka edges Angelique Kerber
World number one, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, ousted the seventh ranked German, Angelique Kerber, in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 to qualify for the semi-final stage of London Olympics on Thursday.
She registered her third head-to-head triumph against the seventh seeded German tennis ace with the help of 26 winners and five aces coupled with six successful break point conversions.
Kerber wasn’t bad at all with her statistics as well. She matched the number of winners of her rival and smashed two aces; committed no double faults compared to two her rival and just made two more unforced errors than the 23-year-old
Belarusian.
However, the category that drowned the 24-year-old German was the number of breakthroughs registered. She managed to translate four of the allotted nine breakpoints whilst her opponent managed to clinch one more breakpoints in
each set to sneak a win.
Serena Williams crushes Caroline Wozniacki
Former world number one, Serena Williams, brutally sidelined the eighth ranked Dane, Caroline Wozniacki, in a quick fire two-setter to reach the semi-final stage of the London Olympics. She registered scores of 6-0, 6-3 to give
a shocking nightmare to her fellow former world number one rival on the eve of Thursday.
Williams smashed 30 winners compared to just seven of the Dane and hit six aces to round off the match in an emphatic fashion. A bagel to the in-form Dane shows the brutal run of form Williams is having at the moment; literally
shattering her opponents apart.
Wozniacki was unable to construct a single break opportunity that shows the level of domination by the American at the grass courts of Wimbledon. The Dane struck just one ace and gobbled up 40 points in total that included the
17 unforced errors made by the American. So, all in all it was the most brutal treatment anyone could get being a former world number one.
Will it be another massacre of the tennis women at the hands of the 30-year-old American superstar or will the things change and the supreme unbeaten run of 15 matches will come to an end for Williams?
