Victoria Azarenka topples Irina-Camelia Begu to enter title-round – Generali ladies Linz 2012
World number one, Victoria Azarenka from Belarus, crushed the Romanian lucky loser, Irina-Camelia Begu, with a breadstick at the Generali Ladies Linz 2012 on Saturday. She jolted down a 6-2, 6-1 victory against the 22-year-old to book a place in the final
showdown at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event held in Linz, Austria.
Seeded top in this event, Azarenka stayed on track to bid for her sixth year-to-date title after trouncing the Romanian star in their fourth meeting. After registering the success in one hour and 11 minutes, the Belarusian improved to a 4-0 lifetime in the
head-to-head series against Begu and charged into the final round at this indoor hard court event.
Azarenka stated in a press conference after triumphing over Begu:
"In some games I felt like I was in trouble because I wasn't being as aggressive as I should have been, but I have to give her credit, she was stepping up and going for her shots. I could have been more precise today."
The 23-year-old thundered into the Intersport Arena. She drew the first blood in the opening game to take the initial lead. Despite losing her serve in the very next game, the Belarusian broke her rival’s serve again and jumped to a 3-1 lead. Azarenka maintained
consistency in her game and after breaking her opponent’s serve for the third time, she sealed the opener with a 6-2 win.
The Monaco resident kept momentum rolling in the following set. She swiped her entire serves without facing any trouble. Azarenka cashed three out of four break chances and pulled out the victory with a breadstick.
Azarenka will face off fifth seeded Julia Goerges in the title-round.
The Belarusian star reflected about her next match-up:
"Julia is a very unpredictable player. She goes for her shots a lot and sometimes what she does doesn't depend on you at all. I've played her a few times and it's never easy. It's definitely going to be a tough battle. Also, I really like Julia as a person.
She's really fun and always very nice.”
The gorgeous Goerges bounced back to outfox the Belgian qualifier, Kirsten Flipkens, in a three-set thriller to set up this clash.
