Victoria Azarenka topples Julia Goerges to reach the quarters – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Top seeded Victoria Azarenka crippled the German ace, Julia Goerges, with a breadstick at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Tuesday night. She jolted down a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the world number 15 to advance into the final eight at this WTA (Women’s Tennis
Association) Premier Mandatory event taking place in Indian Wells, California.
Azarenka showed her top notch performance at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and crushed the German in straight sets to maintain to cruise to 20-0 win-loss record this season. As a result, she not only extended her lead in the
head-to-head series by 3-1 against Goerges but also booked a spot in the quarter-finals.
The delighted Azarenka stated in a social networking site after the match, “good day and match today! on to the next one
#Indian Wells.”
The 22-year-old assertively entered the American hard courts and held her serve in the second game to level the scores at 1-1. After Goerges held her serve in the third game, she unveiled her true colours and wiped out the following four games in a row with
two breaks of serve. Despite losing her serve in the seventh game, Azarenka capitalised on another break chance in the last game and clinched the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Ranked 1st in the WTA rankings, Azarenka peppered the lines with authoritative groundstrokes in the following set and pulled out the breadstick. She had a nervy start as she lost her serve in the opening game, but then refocused and went on a
six-game killing spree.
The Belarusian is eyeing to level the record of Serena Williams 21 consecutive wins. She has already passed Maria Sharapova’s record of the best WTA start of 18-0.
Next up for the Belarusian number one is the Polish ace, Agnieszka Radwanska.
"We always have really tough battles and I'm looking forward to playing her again," the Belarusian said about her next rival. "Agnieszka's someone who always come up with something different. You can never really predict what she's going to do. All you can
do is try to play your game and not really worry what she's going to do.”
The Pole registered a 6-3, 4-6, 3-0 retirement victory over the local wild card entrant, Jamie Hampton, to set-up this meeting.
