Victoria Azarenka topples Maria-Jose Martinez Sanchez in round two – London Olympics 2012
World number one, Victoria Azarenka, crippled the Spanish contender, Maria-Jose Martinez Sanchez, with a breadstick at the London Olympics 2012 on her 23rd birthday. She notched up a 6-1, 6-2 victory against the 29-year-old to breeze into the
third round at Games of the x*x Olympiads in Wimbledon, London.
The birthday girl, Azarenka, showed flawless performance to crush Martinez Sanchez in their fifth meeting. After earning the spotlight, the Belarusian star not only took lead in the head-to-head series by 3-2 against the left hander from Spain but also powered
into the round of 16 at this major sports event held after every four years.
The ecstatic Belarus is more focus on her tennis at the moment rather celebrating her birthday. She was quoted in a courtside interview after clinching her match.
"It was a special moment to have a birthday during the Olympic Games but unfortunately I cannot celebrate as I have to get ready for tomorrow. Just wishing for a gold medal won't make it happen."
Azarenka thundered into the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. She blasted exquisite forehands from her box of tricks and went on a four-game tear before the Spaniard could come on the score sheet. The Belarus maintained her intensity and bagged the
last two games, eventually pulling out the opener with a breadstick.
Ranked top in the WTA Premier Rankings, Azarenka swayed from her track in the following set and suffered the first blow in the third game to go 1-2 down. However, she made a spectacular reply and reeled off the following five games in a row, subsequently
clicking the set with a 6-2 win.
Overall the Belarusian number one smacked 20 winners to cruise into the pre-quarters where 16th seeded Nadia Petrova awaits her. The Russian seed triumphed over Georgia’s Anna Tatishvili in a three-set thriller to set up this blockbuster clash.
The former world number one, Venus Williams, will accompany Azarenka in the following round. She devastated the Canadian star, Aleksandra Wozniak, with a breadstick in 63 minutes. She spilled several unforced errors but covered it up by blasting 32 winners.
