Victoria Azarenka trying to re-group after success at the London Olympics – Tennis News
World number one, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, had a successful run at the London Olympics. Just three days back, she brought honour for her country and herself by winning two medals at the biggest sports event of the world.
First, Azarenka defeated Russia’s Maria Kirilenko to capture the Bronze medal in the women’s singles event on Saturday. One day later, she partnered Max Mirnyi to beat Great Britain’s Andy Murray and Laura Robson to capture Gold
Medal in the mixed doubles event.
Azarenka was taking part in Olympics for the first time in her career. Two medals from which one is Gold in the very first event at the Mega event is dream performance for any sportsperson. One would plan to take a break to relax
and enjoy oneself after this performance but Azarenka has reached Montreal to participate in the Rogers Cup.
Talking to the reporters in the pre-match press conference, the Belarusian said, "It's not easy to regroup mentally because you want to celebrate a bit, but you have no time. You have to go back to the tennis court and practise.
But I'm happy to be here. I can't wait to start this tournament and just play tennis again."
Azarenka made a stunning start in this season, as she went on a 26 match winning streak. She started by winning the Australian Open at the start of January and lost her first match of the season at the Sony Ericsson Open at the
end of March. However, there was a little slump of form after that, as he failed to reach the title match at the French Open and Wimbledon.
The Belarusian is at the top of world rankings but Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska are not far behind her.
Azarenka added, "It's really exciting. We're all showing consistent tennis through the year. We're all winning tournaments. It's exciting for people to watch when it's close and we're doing our best competing against each other.
It's definitely going to be interesting by the end of the year."
The Belarusian star will meet Tamira Paszek of Austria in the second round of the Rogers Cup.
