Victoria Azarenka will lead the Toray Pan Pacific Open field in Tokyo next week – Tennis News
Reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, will be seen in action once again in the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Japan, next week. She will lead the competitive tennis field in the WTA Premier event as the top
seed.
The 23-year-old diva last appeared in the final of the US Open two weeks ago, suffering a cracking defeat at the hands of the American powerhouse, Serena Williams. She has taken a breather of two weeks and intends to make another
winning comeback to the professional circuit in Tokyo.
Riding a 54-8 winning record for the running season, Azarenka has already bagged four WTA championship titles and aims at extending her title count in the remaining year. She is still holding the top spot in the WTA rankings despite
her failure in London Olympics and US Open, and will be the hot favourite for winning in Tokyo.
Azarenka’s arch rival, Maria Sharapova, is seeded at number two in the tournament draw. The world number two Russian diva is evenly rated as the favourite for winning the coveted title. World number three, Agnieszka Radwanska,
hold the third seed, while the Czech number one, Petra Kvitova, is listed at number four in the tournament seeds. Other top-tenners in the draw include Angelique Kerber, Sara Errani, Li Na, Samantha Stosur and Marion Bartoli, in the respective order of seeds.
The top ranked Belarusian hasn’t won a WTA title since her emphatic triumph at the glorious Indian Wells Masters event back in March this year. She has been reaching the late stages of most of the tournaments and hence, has sustained
the top spot in the WTA Premier Rankings. She managed to pocket a bronze medal from the London Games and her run till the final of the US Open gathered her enough points remain at the world number one position.
Sharapova lost to Azarenka in the semi-final of the US Open and hasn’t played a match since then. Radwanska has been the most consistent performer of the current season and hopefully she will be there to reach at least the quarter-final
stages of the tournament.
