Victoria Azarenka wipes out Samantha Stosur in 2nd round robin match – WTA Championships 2011
Victoria Azarenka maintained her winning streak by thrashing Samantha Stosur in the second round robin match of the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships 2011 to take a 5-0 lead in the head-to-head series on day 2 of the event.
The two competitors were set to play and the match unfolded on indoor hard courts of the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey. It took Azarenka only one hour and seventeen minutes to get rid of the current US Open Champion Stosur
in straight sets of 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday the 26th of October.
Stosur was able to turn the tables against Maria Sharapova but against Azarenka, she remained her timid self. In the opening set even though, Stosur hit two aces, she was only able to achieve 56 percent of her total service points.
Mean while, Azarenka was on a roll as she bagged an ostentatious 80 percent of her total service points won and with a sturdy defence did not setup a single breakpoint chance for her adversary in the entire match!
Inaugurating the opening round was Aussie Stosur and she was comfortably able to kick off the scoreboard at 1-0. However, she double faulted once in the third game and gave Azarenka the lead that she was looking for. From there
onwards the Belarusian was able to take the lead and capitalized on another breakpoint in the fifth game to conquer the opening set by restricting her adversary to only two games.
Azarenka has had an amazing year and appears to be extremely motivated. Although this year she b aged three WTA titles, she seems to be drawing her confidence from her last week’s title win at Luxemburg. With a barrage of deep
penetrating ground strokes Azarenka did not let the Aussie set her rhythm in the entire match.
Amidst the second set Azarenka took a notch higher in her service game and was able to hit 74 percent of her first serves on target. Moreover, she accomplished 80 percent of her first serve points along with, saving a hundred percent
of her breakpoints.
Commencing the second round of the match was once again Stosur and this time she got off to a bad start. Nevertheless, Azarenka was easily able to reel of straight two games against Stosur and quickly took a mini lead of 2-0 on
the scoreboard. She broke Stosur once more during the fifth game and with a hold of service games, she conquered the set on her fourth match point with another 6-2 victory.
After sealing her victory of the match Azarenka said, "I served very well today and I wish I can continue to play like this".
Fourth seeded Azarenka will now be facing the Chinese superstar Li Na in the third round robin Match of the WTA Championships 2011.
