Victoria Duval qualify for the quarter-finals – US Open 2012 Girls’ Singles
Wild card entrant, Victoria Duval, overcame all the odds and qualified for the quarter-finals of the US Open Champions 2012 held at the hard courts of the magnificent Flushing Meadows.
In the third round the local challenger annihilated the Liechtenstein native, Kathinka Von Deichmann, summing up her, 6-2, 6-2, triumph on Thursday. She demonstrated her high spirits right from the time she stepped
on the hard courts of the Grand Slam and progressed against her rival with a strong resolve to clinch the win.
The 16-year-old successfully secured her initial serve in the opening set but immediately the score line levelled to 1-1. She then grabbed her lead by breaking her rival’s serve in the fourth game and marked
a 3-1 lead. Although, the 18-year-old Deichmann tried her best to rally past her rival, she miserably failed in her task and closed the set with a 2-6 loss.
The following set repeated the comparable pattern but Duval faced a tough start at the hand of Deichmann, who broke her serve in the third game to attain a 2-1 lead. However, she nailed down her 6-2 win as the
game kicked forward and closed out the match in her favour.
Earlier in the second round, the American displayed a remarkable game plan and stunned Eugenie Bouchard in a tough encounter. However, she commenced a sloppy start in the opening set and the Canadian snatched
the initial four games, jolting down her 4-0 lead.
The 18-year-old very confidently served in the match, maintaining a steady momentum throughout and did not face a single break of serve. The American underdog seemed powerless in front of her rival and pocketed
her 2-6 loss.
The second set drastically shifted the score line and the third seeded Canadian native miserably failed to retain her previous class. The American broke her opponent’s serve twice, once in the fourth and the
next in the sixth game, giving herself the assurance to stamp the set with her 6-1 lead.
The decider proved to be a tough challenge for both the contestants, as they badly wanted to snatch the win. Ranked 173rd in the WTA Premier rankings, Bouchard struggled hard to regain
her initial glory but could not hold on to her serve in the third and the fifth game. This marked the American win and she assertively progressed to achieve her 6-4 win.
The next challenge for the right-hander American participant will be against the ninth seeded Kazakh Anna Danilina.
