Victoria Duval thrashes Kateryna Kozlova in the third round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
American Victoria Duval knocked out Kateryna Kozlova of Ukraine in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the third round of girls’ singles event at the Wimbledon Championships in London on Thursday. It took the American an hour and sixteen
minutes to oust her opponent in a one-sided contest.
Duval took the lead straightaway as she broke the Ukrainian in the first game of the opening set and held her serve in the next game to go ahead 2-0. Kozlova claimed two successive games, breaking the American in the fourth game
and levelling the score at 2-2. However, it was all Duval show after that as she claimed four of the next five games, breaking the Ukrainian twice to capture the set 6-3.
The American hit 80 percent of the first serves and a single ace in the first set. Duval had a decent first serve conversion rate as she converted 63 percent of the first serves into points. On the other hand, Kozlova delivered
72 percent of the first serves and converted 58 percent of them into points. Duval made the difference with her powerful return of serve as she bagged 50 percent of the receiving points in the opening set. The American capitalised on three of the six break
point opportunities she created on Kozlova’s serve and failed to save the only break point she faced on her own serve in the first set.
Kozlova took the early lead in the second set as she broke the American in the second game of the second set, taking a 2-0 lead. After that, Duval completely destroyed the Ukrainian as she won six straight games, breaking Kozlova
three times and sealing the set 6-2.
The American fired a single ace and a whopping sixteen winners in the second set. Duval managed to hit 73 percent of the first serves and converted 54 percent of them into points in the second set. The sixteenth seed was brilliant
with the return of serve as she grabbed 60 percent of the receiving points in the second set. On the other hand, Kozlova won 45 percent of the return points in the second set. The Ukrainian smashed seven winners and nine unforced errors in the second set.
Kozlova failed to convert six of the seven break points she received on Duval’s serve and could not save three of the four break points on her own serve in the second set.
Duval is slated to take on twelfth seed Ashleigh Barty of Australia in the quarter-finals.
