Victoria Kan hits back at Ioana Loredana Rosca to enter final – Antalya ITF 2012
Russian challenger, Victoria Kan, made an epic comeback from a set down to overpower the Romanian qualifier, Ioana Loredana Rosca, in a three-set thriller at the Antalya ITF 2012 on Sunday. She clobbered a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory against the qualifier to power into the final showdown at this ITF (International Tennis Federation) Women’s Circuit event taking place in Antalya, Turkey.
Seeded seventh in this event, Kan made a sloppy entry at this outdoor clay court tournament. However, she made a spectacular comeback and succeeded in overpowering the Romanian in their first encounter. After recording the victory in almost two and half hours, the Russian comfortably advanced into the title-round.
The underdog made a comfortable entry at the Go Tennis Academy. She made quick in-roads and drew the first blood in the opening game. Apart from losing her edge in the very next game, the Romanian capitalised on another break chance in the very next game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. She then held her remaining serves with poise and eventually sealed the opener by winning six games to four. Rosca brushed off one out of two breakpoints she came across and capitalised on two out of five break chances to move a step closer towards her goal.
The 17-year-old re-focused her strategy in the following set. She drew the first blood in the second game and jumped to a 3-0 lead. Kan lost her edge towards the end but quickly broke her opponent’s serve again and clinched the equaliser with a 6-3 score line. She brushed off two out of three breakpoints she came across and converted two out of three break chances to her advantage.
Ranked 450th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Kan went out of control in the deciding set. She blasted flurry of groundstrokes and winded up all six games in a row, eventually pulling out the decider with a bagel. She fended off all three breakpoints she encountered and marked all three break chances to achieve her goal.
Next in line for Kan is the top seed, Anastasiya Vasylyeva from Ukraine.
