Victoria Poon earns Women’s 50m freestyle gold - Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials
Victoria Poon of PPO earned gold medal of the Women’s 50m freestyle on last day of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal on Sunday, April 1.
Poon, who qualified into the playoff as second best swimmer, geared up her pace in the playoff to prove her mettle for gold medal. With her immaculate efforts, she snared gold medal of the discipline by clocking a time of 25.03 seconds.
With her superb performance, she remained 0.25 seconds ahead of Chantal Vanlandeghem of MANTA, who followed her on the victory stand for silver medal by producing an effort of 25.28 seconds.
In the meantime, the crowd experienced commendable efforts of Hannah Riordan of PPO, who stayed just 0.05 seconds slower from overpowering her former swimmer and emerged on the finishing end for bronze medal by producing a time of 25.33 seconds.
The fourth position of the single-lap freestyle event was secured by Jennifer Beckberger of WD, who stayed only two strokes behind Riordan and emerged on the finishing blockade by clocking a time of 25.50 seconds.
The fourth position holder was trailed by Sandrine Mainville of PPO, who was just 0.04 seconds slower from Beckberger and settled on the finishing end as fifth position holder by clocking a time of 25.54 seconds.
The sixth best spot of the event was occupied of Seanna Mitchell of UCSC, who was also 0.04 seconds behind her foregoing competitor and managed to end up on the finishing end with an effort of 25.58 seconds.
Mitchell was chased by Michelle Williams of NYAC, who stayed 0.43 seconds slower from her and tapped the finishing wall with the timing of 26.01 seconds.
Subsequently, Williams remained 0.20 seconds faster from her following swimmer, Fionnuala Pierse of EKSC, who completed her swim in a time of 26.21 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Poon was very delighted with her title-claiming struggle, as she not only clinched gold medal of the discipline but she also confirmed her place in the Canadian team to the 2012 London Olympic Games. Furthermore, winners received accolades at the medal ceremony of the championship.
