Victoria v Tasmania – Sheffield Shield (7th Match) – Match Update (Day 1)
Tasmania’s batsman established a dominant position for the team on Day 1 of their Sheffield Shield match against Victoria, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377 playing starring roles as the Tigers posted a solid total of 315 for 3 by stumps, on October 23
at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The match kicked off with Victoria winning the toss and choosing to field first. Tasmania's openers Mark Cosgrove and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Graham-Downton-c44379 Cowan got the team off to a steady start – Cosgrove racked up an individual score of 56 (including 7 boundaries), while Cowan chipped
in with a 42-run contribution.
The two batsmen had managed to post a combined total of 90 runs on the board, when http://www.senore.com/Cricket/PM-Siddle-c2197 at deep backward square leg. He was followed
to the crease by Alex Doolan, who joined Cowan for a 44-run partnership.
Their efforts got the team total up to 134 by the 48th over, but the partnership was not allowed to proceed further. Cowan was eventually caught at slip by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CJ-McKay-c1265, who claimed one wicket and gave away only 46 runs during
19 overs in the process.
Cowan was followed to the crease by Ricky Ponting, who remained unbeaten at the end of the day on 89 – a score he will be hoping to convert into a century on Day 2. Doolan and Ponting teamed up for a mammoth 151-run stand for the third wicket, which brought
the Tigers up to 285 by the 85th over.
Five runs away from what could have been his second century of the season, Doolan was denied the chance to reach triple figures, and found himself bowled by Peter Siddle (18-1-76-1) on 95. With three batsmen down, skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Bailey-c1480 stepped up to the
crease, and managed to contribute 13*, while his partnership with Ponting (89*) swelled to 30*, getting Tasmania up to 315 for 3 by stumps on Day 1.
Victoria’s bowlers remained unable to make timely dents in the formidable partnerships forged by the Tasmanian batsmen – McKay, Siddle, and Maxwell remained the only bowlers who managed to pick up wickets (one each), while others, such as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Pattinson-c1653
and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 looking to be on their way to a massive total, Victoria will need quick wickets on Day 2 if they are to have a hope of reining the Tigers in.
