Victoria 1 for 22, trail by 186 runs.
Victorian pacers Andrew McDonallad and Jayde Herrick’s excellent bowling display allowed their team to restrict New South Wales on 208 in their first innings - before the hosts posted 22 for 1 at stumps on Day 1 of the First-Class Sheffield Match, played
at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, on March 8, 2012.
Both bowlers made headway in to the tourists' batting lineup with three and two wickets respectively, with only http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SPD-Smith-c2555 offering any resistance with a sensible 86-run knock.
New South Wales elected to bat first and had a promising start after openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Phillip-Hughes-c2185 shared a solid 40-run stand.
The first breakthrough for Victoria came in the 22nd over of the match when left-arm fast bowler, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/William-Sheridan-c2797, picked up Hughes, who was trapped in front of the wickets for 22.
Sheridan then got his second scalp a few overs later, rattling Maddinson with a delivery which took a healthy edge on to the keeper.
The two new batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Usman-Khawaja-c2729 and Steven Smith then established a promising 31-run partnership and took the team's score to 78 before Herrick sent Khawaja back on 20.
Struggling at 78 for 3, Smith and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ben-Rohrer-c1139 took the task of reconstructing the innings. Both the batsmen played sensibly and added a valuable partnership of 59, which took the team’s total to 137.
The partnership however, came to end when the fast bowler, McDonald, picked two consecutive scalps of Rohrer (15) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Nevill-c2180 (0).
Smith went on to complete his half-century and looked destined to compile a deserved three-figure score; however, he fell prey to Herrick after making 86, which included 14 boundaries.
He had somewhat, restored his team’s fragile position in the game but his dismissal also followed indiscipline from the lower order. The remaining four batters contributed with a combined total of 41 as the tourists ended on a disappointing 208.
All the Victorian bowlers performed well, as they made full use of their home advantage to halt their opponents. Apart from McDonald and Herrick, Sheridan also bowled impeccably to take 2 scalps.
The hosts were left to play out a few nervy overs and registered 22 for 1 before the close of play. They had to face an early setback when http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Rogers-c1249 was taken out by Chris Tremain.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jon-Holland-c1724 remained unbeaten on 7 and 2 respectively and will be hoping to provide their team with the ascendency when play resumes on Day 2.
