  1. The Eureka Stockade was the setting of a gold miners' revolt in 1854 near Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, against the officials supervising the mining of gold in the region. The revolt was prompted by grievances over heavily priced mining items, the expense of a Miner's Licence, taxation (via the license) without representation and the actions of the government and its agents (the police and military)

  2. Shabu did a pretty good job of addressing question number one, but missed the boat on number 2.

    Here you go:

The Eureka Flag was the battle flag used at the Eureka Stockade, a gold miners' revolt in 1854 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. Since World War 2 it has become, among other things, a symbol of protest for a wide variety of causes in Australia. The original flag is located at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery.  For more detailed information go to the wikipedia source.
